Taking the Epistle

A biblical journey through the epistles

Happy Easter (Resurrection) Sunday

Easter blessings

Luke 24:1 (ESV) But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

Today is Easter Sunday, or as us Christians call it “Resurrection Sunday” and today is the day where we celebrate what makes Christianity different from all other religions. The fact that our messiah came to earth as a human, died for us and rose again. This doctrine is central to the faith.

Painting the picture

Imagine the scene, the disciples all were devastated, the man they had spent the last three years with, the one they understood to be the Son of God, the one they had seen many miracles be performed from was dead.

He had been crucified just before the Sabbath and everyone seen that he was dead and it was the number one topic of conversation wherever they went.

The women who attended our LORD

These women were desperate to attend to the body of Jesus as was the custom. They had been hampered from doing so as quickly as they would have liked due to the Sabbath but literally from the hour they were able to they wanted to be with Jesus. These women started their journey before dawn, light was only just coming up when they got there.

Males you evaluate your own time with Jesus huh? Are you in such a rush to spend time with him? Is it that high a priority?

Where was he?

What they were expecting to see was a body. But instead they saw a tomb that was open. This must have been perplexing as this tomb was to have a stone, to be sealed and to be guarded by two of Romans finest soldiers who would be there “on pain of death”.

Not only was the tomb open, but the body was gone. Now let’s recap, in their minds they knew and witnessed Jesus dying on that cross. They saw the cruelest possible way to kill a criminal unfold in the manner of crucifixion. People just don’t come back from crucifixion!

They knew the answer but forgot in their grief

They were reminded of the words of Jesus where he said he would rise again on the third day. They knew the answer but forgot in their grief, the prophecy became reality and went to tell the others.

The others were in the same fragile state, one of their best friends had betrayed their master for 30 silver coins, couldn’t handle the guilt and hung himself and also they lost Jesus, they guy who they thought was going to be the messiah, did many miracles and ended up dying next to the criminals on a criminals device for torture and death.

The women relay the news

These women come to them with the most fantastically unbelievable tale! That the Jesus who they had seen being tortured and hung up on the hill of the Skull actually was missing from.the tomb and that they had been told he was alive.

Do you think they swallowed it right away? No! the man Peter, the one who is famous for jumping in and saying the wrong thing is careful about what Jesus believes here. He wants to believe but about so wants to be sure! Cautiously he goes to the tomb to check out the story. His heart shows that he is desperately seeking it to be true, went to see the cloth laying there and had the proof he needed.

Not quite the end of the story

Later in the chapter we read about Jesus appearing to the disciples, even allowing Thomas to feel his wounds to ensure that he was actually the messiah. Jesus fulfilled this to show he did actually raise from the dead.
These guys from this point would do amazing things for the gospel and in many cases proclaim the good news to the point of their own individual deaths.

My hope is that this article is a reminder to those who do believe what Easter is all about also well as a helping resource to those who are yet to believe.
