Taking the Epistle

A biblical journey through the epistles

02 – Separating the waters

Creation day two – Separating the waters.

Thank you for looking at our Creation series, my desire in these pages is to look at the literal days of creation and in greater detail quoting primarily from the first book of the Bible, the book of Genesis.

In part one we looked at day one of creation, why it was a literal day and examined why God put it in the perfect order that he did, today we start again on day two at the bible verses below.

Genesis 1:6 (ESV) And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

I love how God has written the history of the world on these pages, we do not have to add to it, make theories or use our own intelligence to make hypothesis into a deeper or more intellectual meaning, it is just there, God made the truth accessible to everyone. Let’s look at the text…

Genesis 1:6 (ESV) And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”

Notice how easy it is for God to get something accomplished? We are told “God said…” The next time we are feeling overwhelmed with what life has thrown at us and we think that God does not have this, remember this – God created … by simply saying.

That is not to say we have some benevolent genie who will grant you every wish (or we would all have Mercedes Benz vehicles) whether it is beneficial or not. God is working all the time and we as sinful humans have to ask according to his will.

Why go into so much detail about waters?

By explaining the situation with the waters it also goes on to explain later how God was able to flood the earth so easily. Let’s look at Genesis 7 – when the earth is flooded.

Genesis 7:11 (ESV) In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

We read here that the fountains came from below the earth (great deep) and also above the earth (windows of heavens) which is a reverse of what happened in the verses in Genesis 1 when God created everything, this tells me the following:

1) God created in order, he created the universe, heavens and earth in day one, he made perfect water situation In day two.
2) Had he not done this, we see the results in Genesis 7, mankind would not have survived.
3) This is more scientific than modern science as there is perfect order here.
4) God knew that later there would be people who would doubt so he gave evidence in his book to show people how it actually happened.

Creation – was it Old Earth or Young Earth?

Judging by the evidence in creation, when God created things in the beginning, he created them mature, we read that he created matter that was ripe for creation to bloom, the plants, trees and vegetation were all ready. (No report of waiting a few weeks for things to sprout, it literally was was a creation week) Lastly we have humans and animals that were created fully grown, the evidence points to an earth that was older when it was created leading people to believe the earth is older than it actually is.

What was it like?

It truly is difficult to imagine what “pre-fall” (or even pre-flood) conditions must have been like as the earth that we know today is much different than the intended earth that God created.

We read that Eden was “very good” that God had created the perfect temperature and given all that was required to have a good life. In today’s earth we don’t have that protection. There are areas that are under ice and areas that get too much sun, we see this through basic observational science.

Protection by God

Genesis 1:7 (ESV) And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

So God as a loving father, has this protective blanket of water blocking out the stuff that today causes mutations such as UV rays and other skin diseases that shorten life.

Can you imagine a huge water protected greenhouse that required nothing externally to make it grow, lush green vegetation that was self sufficient and perfect. In the midst of of a Californian drought I see how far removed we Andre from God’s perfect plan.

You see, God created this earth to be lived in, the case I am making is that when he created the earth there was no uninhabitable places, we were commanded to “Go forth and multiply” so he also took measures to create the perfect place for us to live, to coexist with God and worship him as he intended.

Heaven on earth?

Belinda Carlisle once sang about “Heaven being a place on earth” this is about as close theologically as she could have got.

We know of course that we live on land and about sure not amphibious creatures, God again is making the foundation to have land on this new creation. This happens on day three of creation.

This again points to the perfect order of Gods creation and how different it is compared to the most brilliant minds that God created could come up with.

God Vs Science

You see, God is not against science, the elders of the science religion have set themselves against God. You see, God created the evidence to be interpreted and to leave clues as to his existence. How you interpret that evidence is your choice.

Like every loving father he wants his children to obey and follow him, only one path leads to eternal life. (I explain this more in our Gospel section)

My hope is that these pages will make you investigate the claims of the Bible as regards to the creation account. If you have any questions then please see below.
