Taking the Epistle

A biblical journey through the epistles

04 – The Sun, Moon & Stars

Creation day four – The Sun, Moon and stars

Thank you for looking at our Creation series, my desire in these pages is to look at the literal days of creation and in greater detail quoting primarily from the first book of the Bible, the book of Genesis.

In part one we looked at day one of creation, why it was a literal day and examined why God put it in the perfect order that he did, in part two we looked at the waters separating, in part three we looked at earth, vegetation and trees and today we start again on day four at the bible verses below.

Genesis 1:14 (ESV) And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

Let there be lights

In this day in the creation account we will look at what man has used as markers for days, for nights and for seasons. We make our calendar’s based on the rising and the falling of this self-same sun, both days and seasonal changes are reflected in the patterns that these two planets interacting. Fascinating astrology right here in the bible.

Satan has of course copied what God did here and called it the “Zodiac” it is a satanic impression on what God had done here in this passage of scripture. Some subtle Zodiac adherents will also allude to the “Christian origins”. Personally I try to avoid it; it leads to sorcery such as witchcraft, palm reading and things that invoke spirits like horoscopes and claims of celestial insight. I avoid it all!

The prophet Isaiah talks about this in the Isaiah 47:

Isaiah 47:12 (ESV) Stand fast in your enchantments and your many sorceries, with which you have labored from your youth; perhaps you may be able to succeed; perhaps you may inspire terror. 13 You are wearied with your many counsels; let them stand forth and save you, those who divide the heavens, who gaze at the stars, who at the new moons make known what shall come upon you. 14 Behold, they are like stubble; the fire consumes them; they cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame. No coal for warming oneself is this, no fire to sit before! 15 Such to you are those with whom you have labored, who have done business with you from your youth; they wander about, each in his own direction; there is no one to save you.

It is a slippery slope once you go down that road; you replace the truth of God for a lie. You start to wonder if God only made us, if there is “intelligent life out there” if we are just one of many planets searching for others. Personally I don’t believe that there are other planets out there with intelligent life. (Sometimes I do wonder about the ability to find some here also)

This is a fascinating part of scripture as it shows that God measured out the distance between the Sun and the Moon in order to use the properties to sustain life. If God set the Sun too close, then we would be scorched, if God set it too far away, then everything would die.

The Psalmist in Psalm 19 talks about the heavens in relation to Gods handiwork as follows…

Psalms 19:1 (ESV) The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. 4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, 5 which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. 6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

Science offers a different explanation, that everything was an accident and that it is by sheer luck that we ended up just the right distance away from a planet that is so vital for the survival of many living things on this planet. Which seems more likely to you?

Creation screams to the existence of a Creator God, all the way through this account we see little evidences that we as natural man overlooks and does not consider. We take a lot for granted on the things that we should question and we question and hypotheses theories that are bunkum and have no heavenly value.

Evidence based?

Living in Scotland for so long I did not see the sun for long periods of time, I knew that it existed due to the light emanating through the clouds. So I had a little evidence to show me when it was daytime and when it was night. Likewise, there were nights where weather played a part in whether I saw the moon or stars. But the evidence I had before me told me they were there.

The moon runs on a cycle, usually a full moon is in the first week or so of a month, last quarter comes next about a week later and new moon comes about a week after that and then the first quarter next, this gives us evidence of the motion we are travelling around the moon.

History tells us that navigators and ships captains for many hundreds of years have used the stars that were created on that day to navigate vessels and be a GPS long before GPS was invented.

My hope is that these pages will make you investigate the claims of the Bible as regards to the creation account. If you have any questions then please see below.
