Romans 5:12 (ESV) Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. 18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Let’s start in verse twelve of chapter five…

V12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.

Paul continues his thought talking about the hereditary sin that we have through Adam. You will notice that he says it is through Adam and not through Eve because Adam was meant to be the head of the home so he was supposed to protect his wife from temptation. Paul takes the account in Genesis 3 as a literal account and ascribes the truth to it that it deserves and there is no debate in Paul’s mind whether Genesis is literal or not. Paul makes the following points

• Sin came into world through one man – The buck stops with Adam, as the head of the home he carries the can for his household and as the first man and the father of us all he allows us to partake of his folly. Do not think dear Christian that all sins go unpunished in this lifetime as often times our errors will have repercussions beyond ourselves and our children’s decedents.

  If you doubt this then have a read through the book of Nehemiah then you will see that once they became aware of their sins then they made sacrifices for not just their generation but also their children too. If you are a parent you will want God’s blessings on your kids and a good measure of how much you love them as a Christian parent is how much you pray for them. Until very recently I have been lax in this area but that is something I have been burdened to do.

• Death through sin – Death entered the world and spread like a virus, due to the fall of man we see the heart of man did not strive with God and a sinful nature overcame him and it required obedience and sacrifice to obey God. Adam was warned that a result of the original sin that death would enter into the world. God had created a place that was safe, that man could go forth and multiply and that was very good and because of sin everything started to go wrong due to the introduction of sin and death.
• Death spread to all men because all sinned – As Paul shows us the connection between sin and death we see the connection due to every single family on this planet has had someone who has died in it. If we are truly fortunate then we may have one or two generations in front of us still alive but I have resigned myself to the fact that unless Jesus comes back I will have a funeral service at some point.

I know this because I come from a family of people who have sinned, some have repented of that sin and some haven’t. The point of what I am saying is that at one point we were all in the same sinful state and this is what matters in relation to where you are with God at present.

Paul counters the idea that the law was given to counter sin. The law was never meant to be the antidote to sin but merely to show the difference between God’s standards and what man could achieve. It was always meant to point to Jesus. The law was too late for sin and was not powerful enough to take away sin.

V14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.

Was their death between Adam and Moses? Of course there was and reading through Genesis you will see a constant strain of people who were born at some point and then…died – So Paul was correct huh? It wasn’t until the time of Moses that the law was given and people continued to sin. Paul compares Adam and Jesus because at the beginning of their life they were the same – SINLESS! However one caused a separation between man and God and the other repaired a separation and allowed a way to be reconciled to God.

Paul continues in this thought by comparing the free gift of salvation with the original sin because both had consequences for the human race because under Adams transgression allowed people to die in their sins due to their wrongdoing against God and Jesus death allowed the grace of God to be spread on the world. One brought death and eternal separation and one brought life and eternal life.

V16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Paul goes on to say that just as Adams sin brought condemnation and allowed death to reign over all in contrast Jesus brought justification, it allowed grace to multiply too many and show that Jesus gift of life would be much more than the power of death. Paul reiterates John 14:6 that Jesus was the only way to heaven and through him is the only way to have righteousness.

V18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

And this is where the rubber meets the road folks, when we pass from this earth we will be associated with one of these two paths we will either be associated with the one who justified us or be associated with disobedience against God. There is no neutral ground here because if you follow disobedience then there will only be one result and that will be separation from God but that does not have to be the way that it is. We can be made righteous before God by following Jesus. A good example of this is a topical one due to this being an election year because we will chose to align ourselves with our favored choice, who represents you best and that will answer that question.

V20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

And Paul summaries his thoughts here and while the law shone light on the wrongdoing we see that grace was more benevolent than our wrongdoings. Does that not tell you the type of God I serve that regardless of how much you kick against him and try to make it impossible for him to have communion with you he loves you that much that his grace is enough to redeem you as his own. As a result of the disobedience we see that sin reigned in death but God wins due to his grace due to the salvation work of the cross in Jesus Christ.

Paul closes by showing us that we cannot save ourselves, the law and the works based faith will fail and we have to stand on the work of Jesus because that is the only way that this unrighteous man will stand righteous before God. It is not of my own doing but simply my recognition that I have sinned and needed forgiveness from God. We are saved by grace through faith and that is a gift of God. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit – Jude 1:20-23 – 02/05/2016

Jude 1:20 (ESV) But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

Lord willing it is my desire to go through the epistle of Jude on a verse by verse basis and we have reached verse twenty so far, please join me in looking at the text beginning in verse twenty…

V20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.

First of all, can you believe that we are on article eight of our series in Jude? It is such a small book (or letter) by so dynamic in so many ways. Jude has just finished warning us of these “certain men” that have crept in and essentially are wolves in sheep’s clothing. What Jude does here is a valid warning and to be honest we have to be alert.

However, in the modern church we have a whole bunch of ministries dedicated to “being alert” and whilst they have a good place in the kingdom of God, I do wonder if they would not be better served focusing their cannons on saving the lost and concentrating on solidifying the believers walks with Jesus (starting obviously with themselves.)

Jude agrees with this sentiment with his admonition to “build yourselves up in the most holy faith” and speaking personally I am convicted a lot recently in what I am doing in my home neighborhood is to bring people closer to Jesus and help the ones who have been affected by those “certain men”. Not trying to blow my own trumpet but like we read in Nehemiah, if we all guarded our own wee bit of the wall then the job would be much easier. Really what I am saying is that if you are strong in the Lord then get helping someone, if you need help then seek out one of those strong men because even although we use terms such as “church family” we need to actually live what we say.

We are to keep the focus on God, let us not publicize the ministries of the destructive ones except for a plain admonishment but beyond that let us not make them famous in their infamy. Really we have to remember that we are not the Holy Spirit and that God is just and will deal with them in his own time. We are described as being “beloved” and please do not think that you have done anything to deserve that title as God loves us even when we were ungodly. Paul wrote this in his letter to the Roman church…

Romans 5:6 (ESV) For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

So now we have the basics established that we cannot make ourselves more lovable to God, we are simply told to “nail the basics” and more specifically we are told to “build ourselves in the most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit” means that we are to walk in step with God, that we are to do His will and t build ourselves in a common faith with your creator God.

God love is not a reflection on your goodness as a person but his. God loves you in spite of what you have done when you have sinned against him. As the song states “you are a good good father, it’s who you are” God’s love has certain benefits that cannot be denied and this is one of the reasons that Christianity is hard to swallow for certain critics, the fact that God would be so loving that he would literally allow the death of an innocent to restore and reconcile man to God.

We have to grow spiritually and keep building up. As a father I understand that I expect my child to be more advanced at age six than she was at age five, if she was still in diapers (without obviously a good medical reason) at age six then I would wonder what the issue was? We are responsible for our own spiritual growth and must invest in the things of God, reading his word either alone or as part of a reading plan (if you are reading this then you are reading his word with my interpretation behind it)

We have to be in prayer, asking to have the will of God revealed to you on a daily basis, asking for your callings (if you do not know what they are) to be revealed for (and this is important) HIS glory and not for our own. It is similar to my lawn at home, we had a drought in the summer of 2015 and I did not have sprinklers installed, so because of that and the fact I left it to its own devices, the lawn died due to lack of nourishment. If we leave our spiritual lives to their own devices then they will wither and die also. You hear me talking about a day to day relationship and Christianity truly is, I have to be strengthened on a daily basis because if I was left to my own devices I am not all that good of a man! Don’t allow your spiritual grass to wither.

We have to not just stagnate but “grow” in faith and “praying the most Holy Spirit” we have a helper that assists us in our walk, a counselor and one who aids us in the daily battle that we face. If you say “I am not in a battle” is it because you have become lazy? Have you mastered swimming but still hanging around the wading pool? Romans 8 reads from Paul that we should do the following…

Romans 8:26 (ESV) Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

We should pray not for what we desire (be honest now, we all do) but as the Spirit directs, pray not for things that you think God wants you to pray for but pray based on what the Spirit of God directs you too. We know that Jesus return is closer today than it was yesterday and that has to be the constant hope of the Christian that Jesus will soon in fact return.

V22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

Here Jude changes the focus from inwards to those around you, we are called to fit in as a church family, there will be times where we will need help and there will also be times where others need our help, Jude focusses on helping those who are perceived to be “weaker brothers” and this is a piece of scripture I have memorized and held close to my heart from the first moment I read it as a Christian. I realized right away that Jude is accurate in what he states when there is no “one size fits all” approach in helping people; he puts them in two categories…

• And have mercy on those who doubt – We have to use wisdom because there is no greater poison in today’s church than that or “false doctrine” because it looks, smells and feels like the genuine article however in its error it does sow seeds that take root and leave evidence of it in such a manner that when the false teaching is exposed then they believe that their whole faith is in error.

Basically we have to have compassion but be firm with the doctrines, love these people and treat them in such a manner that will win them back to Christ by the love that we show them. Always be a good witness and do not allow yourself to be corrupted but comfort these types of people and make a gentle correction based on sound theological teachings.

Help these people be accountable, perhaps mentor them in a discipleship plan, watch over them as you would a weaker brother who has stumbled into sin. Help them and create an example that they can pass on when they get through this valley and return to faith in Christ Jesus.

• Save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh – There is a second group that you have to be harsher with, we cannot be Pharisaical, proud, puffed up or doing it to swing an axe or show authority.

We are to hate the garment stained by the flesh and not the sinner who has been stained, we are looking to rebuke strongly but the end result we are looking for is to restore that person to a state of fellowship with God and with ourselves. We are to be urgent like the firefighter would be in snatching a victim from a fire, we are looking to save their spiritual lives.

Nehemiah 9:1 (ESV) Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the people of Israel were assembled with fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth on their heads. 2 And the Israelites separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers. 3 And they stood up in their place and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day; for another quarter of it they made confession and worshiped the LORD their God. 4 On the stairs of the Levites stood Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani; and they cried with a loud voice to the LORD their God. 5 Then the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, “Stand up and bless the LORD your God from everlasting to everlasting. Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise. 6 “You are the LORD, you alone. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them. 18 Even when they had made for themselves a golden calf and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed great blasphemies, 19 you in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud to lead them in the way did not depart from them by day, nor the pillar of fire by night to light for them the way by which they should go. 20 You gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst. 21 Forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell. 22 “And you gave them kingdoms and peoples and allotted to them every corner. So they took possession of the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan. 23 You multiplied their children as the stars of heaven, and you brought them into the land that you had told their fathers to enter and possess. 24 So the descendants went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hand, with their kings and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would. 25 And they captured fortified cities and a rich land, and took possession of houses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards, olive orchards and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in your great goodness. 26 “Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their back and killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you, and they committed great blasphemies. 27 Therefore you gave them into the hand of their enemies, who made them suffer. And in the time of their suffering they cried out to you and you heard them from heaven, and according to your great mercies you gave them saviors who saved them from the hand of their enemies. 28 But after they had rest they did evil again before you, and you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies, so that they had dominion over them. Yet when they turned and cried to you, you heard from heaven, and many times you delivered them according to your mercies. 29 And you warned them in order to turn them back to your law. Yet they acted presumptuously and did not obey your commandments, but sinned against your rules, which if a person does them, he shall live by them, and they turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck and would not obey. 30 Many years you bore with them and warned them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet they would not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. 31 Nevertheless, in your great mercies you did not make an end of them or forsake them, for you are a gracious and merciful God. 32 “Now, therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love, let not all the hardship seem little to you that has come upon us, upon our kings, our princes, our priests, our prophets, our fathers, and all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria until this day. 33 Yet you have been righteous in all that has come upon us, for you have dealt faithfully and we have acted wickedly. 34 Our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have not kept your law or paid attention to your commandments and your warnings that you gave them. 35 Even in their own kingdom, and amid your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and rich land that you set before them, they did not serve you or turn from their wicked works. 36 Behold, we are slaves this day; in the land that you gave to our fathers to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts, behold, we are slaves. 37 And its rich yield goes to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and over our livestock as they please, and we are in great distress. 38  “Because of all this we make a firm covenant in writing; on the sealed document are the names of our princes, our Levites, and our priests.

 

Repenting – because they want to, not because they have to!

So we read in the book of Nehemiah that they were now in the 24th day of the month, they had completed a whole bunch of festivals, they had atoned for the nation earlier and yet they were still repenting, in the previous chapters we have lists of the people that were returned from exile and then we see where they were in respect to the year in prior chapters. Despite the fact that they had atoned for their sins in the sacrificial method they continued to be in sackcloth and were in mourning for the wrong that they have done to God. I find that awesome but also challenging! I find myself looking at my own life to see whether I confess and repent as often as I should and in the spirit of honesty I have to say that I do not do what I should in this area, I am challenged due to my own selfish nature and the problems I cause myself when I try to “go it alone” or when I do it not in Gods strength.

I love that they did not just confess their sins but they fell on their face and sought intercession for the sins of their fathers, now this is not the same as weird doctrines such as “baptism for the dead” but they are seeking God’s forgiveness for the example given to them by their fathers and their grandfathers. I am conscious and I worry that the example that I am delivering to my child is a bad one, I have a unique place in that child’s life where I am supposed to be the one she can count on, she will expect her marriage and her husband to be similar to the way that I treat my wife and the way my wife treats me and LORD please help me do a better job than I have done this far. She will expect the man in her life to make decisions similar to the ones I have done and I pray much better than I have done also. She looks at me for spiritual guidance and as she gets older she starts to see chinks in the superhero she believed daddy to be when she grows up, she craves my undivided attention and wants nothing more than to spend time with me and just me, not a distracted daddy who is in the same room, she wants a playmate, someone to learn from and real quality time from ME, I have to realize that I will not get this day again and there really are no do overs in parenting. I repent for the multiple ways I have failed those I claim to love most and if they based it on my actions sometimes I would be guilty of failing to love them. Trust me if sackcloth was available I would be parading around in it at present as I am guilty of this and much more.

This is something we all have to learn, that the things that often times occupy our minds really have no eternal value, our hobbies, our time fillers, our waste of time, our TV shows, our favors we do for others, our good works, the money we make, the things that we use to define us, the goals we have, the demi-gods that we worship instead of the true God and many more things besides really have no value, eternal or otherwise. I go to bed most nights and beat myself up about how much time I have wasted and how I could better have invested that time but then again time after time I never learn! I am far from perfect and I am saying this not to sound holy but I stink to high heaven sometimes and I have no idea why God still pursues a relationship with me but I am grateful that he does because if it was up to me we would be an estranged couple.

I love the prayer that begins in verse 5 and the prayer is from the most powerful prayer language there is, it is from the Word of God they praise God and are genuinely thankful for what he has done in their life, yesterday when we looked at Cain and Abel we looked at the idea of “going through the motions” and giving God lip service and it is easy done and very difficult to get away from doing. It requires diligence, obedience and a willing heart to make a commitment and stick to it, many of us have the first parts nailed down but fall at the final hurdle. This prayer goes through the history that we read in Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua all the way through to the history found in the books of Kings and I find it rich with blessing because I find it true to my own personal experience that when I truly repent, lay myself low before God and strip myself of all that is me then I find that I am convicted of my sins, I am ashamed I am low of what I have done and in the same way these people are I am in mourning of how far I came away from what God wants me to be. I would love to be able to type here that I am perfect but you all know that I am not and I would not wish to lie to you. If you want to know my faults ask my wife and daughter, but reserve a few hours because those faults are many.

This is a foreshadow to the relationship we should be having with Christ, often times we carry burdens that we should have left a long time ago because we have not released it to the LORD in prayer. We know this; we have sung it many times in church in the words of “What a friend we have in Jesus” but how many of us regularly use the relationship in the way God intended? Personally and let me talk about myself for one second and let me say this in bold capital letters so that there is no loss in translation. I DO NOT DO THIS AND I AM STILL LEARNING THIS LESSON! I am not trying to teach something I have mastered but merely wishing to share something that God has put on my heart to share. Let’s be real here, I do not have it all together and I get more wrong than I get right, however I know the remedy to my problem and I just have to get over myself and do it. This is not a false humility or a confession for the sake of dispelling the “I am perfect rumor” but a genuine issue that I covet your prayers on, please pray for me.

This would be like the man who trains to be an EMS or EMT, gets all the knowledge in the world, knows the procedures inside out, learns CPR, learns life saving techniques and can answer “book knowledge” questions and can get 100% on every single test and exam he has ever sat on the subject and then goes on a 911 call and cannot put what he has learned into practice.

God is a gracious God and wants to have that one on one relationship with you, he is not an absentee father and does not wish only weekend visitations but he is a holy God and we have to realize where we are and confess our sins and desire to be holy as he is holy. There is a weird doctrine out there that states that once you are saved then you no longer have to check in with God and that salvation is the end of the road in that respect, salvation is only the first step on a lifelong journey and relationship with Jesus, there is no treading water or staying stagnant. There is either progressing towards God or going further away from him and if you are not doing one then you most definitely doing the other.

Lastly, this passage of the Word of God inspires me to look at my prayer life, to be thankful for what God has done for me, to be real in my prayer time to the one who sees inside my heart, to repent for the ways I have erred and to resolve to do better. Prayer has to be a priority for the man after Gods own heart as I use King David as my example; he messed up big but still took everything to God in prayer and Psalms of praise. What an example to us all and I pray that you are blessed by my thoughts and this small devotion. It was never meant to be a word by word, verse by verse study but just what God had given me to share.
